In Massachusetts, if your food service establishment has 25 or more seats and you’re serving food on-site, the law (105 CMR 590.009(E)) says you need at least one staff member trained in approved manual choking rescue procedures. This includes knowing how to do the Heimlich maneuver and other steps to help someone with a blocked airway.
Choking happens when something blocks a person’s airway, making it hard or impossible to breathe. It’s a scary and sudden situation—people often can’t talk or explain what’s wrong. If the blockage is serious and not cleared right away, it can quickly lead to unconsciousness or even death. That’s why recognizing the signs and acting fast with the right choke-saving steps is absolutely critical.
Choking usually happens when someone accidentally inhales food or another object while eating—and it doesn’t have to be during a full sit-down meal. It can just as easily happen when snacking on the go or even chewing gum.
The Heimlich Maneuver Training and Sequence of Obstructed Airway Maneuvers can be learned in less than 1 hour using our online course.
