Who Needs Food Manager Certification in Wisconsin?

Most licensed Wisconsin food establishments must have at least one manager or operator certified in food protection practices. Wisconsin accepts ANSI-accredited food manager exams, including Always Food Safe’s.

Who Is Exempt

  • Exempt: prepackaged retail food establishments, establishments handling only fresh fruit or produce, transient events and micro markets.
  • Small operators with 5 or fewer food handlers can renew with an approved Food Safety Training for Small Operators course, but only within 90 days of their first exam credential expiring.
  • Miss that window and you must take and pass a full approved exam again.
  • Milwaukee points to the same ANSI exam list for food manager certification.
