Who Needs Food Manager Certification in Nevada?
Nevada’s rules depend on where you operate. Southern Nevada (Clark County) and Washoe County (Reno/Sparks) have their own food regulations; most other areas follow the state code, NAC Chapter 446.

Southern Nevada (Las Vegas)

- SNHD lists The Always Food Safe Company, LLC among accepted ANSI-accredited programs.
- To get your SNHD Certified Food Safety Manager Card: book an appointment, bring your printed certificate and ID, pass a 10-question local test (70%+), and pay $25.
- The card’s expiration matches your certificate’s, up to five years.

Washoe County & NAC 446.052
Reno, Sparks & the Rest of Nevada
- Washoe County: all food establishments except Risk Level 1 and temporary establishments must have at least one CFPM. Risk Level 2 and 3 establishments have 60 days from permit issuance. Post the certificate next to your permit.
- State code (NAC 446.052): the person in charge must demonstrate food safety knowledge, and being a CFPM from an accredited program is the way to do it. Only low-risk or temporary establishments may instead answer the inspector’s questions.

Nevada Food Manager Certification FAQs
Is food manager certification required in Nevada?
For most food establishments, yes. In Clark County, SNHD requires the person in charge to be a Certified Food Protection Manager. Washoe County requires at least one CFPM at all but Risk Level 1 and temporary establishments. Elsewhere, NAC 446.052 requires the person in charge to demonstrate knowledge, normally through CFPM certification; only low-risk or temporary establishments may answer the inspector’s questions instead.
Is Always Food Safe accepted by the Southern Nevada Health District?
Yes. SNHD lists The Always Food Safe Company, LLC Food Protection Manager Certification among its accepted ANSI-accredited programs.
How do I get an SNHD Certified Food Safety Manager Card?
Pass an ANSI-accredited exam and print your certificate. Then schedule an appointment with SNHD, bring the printed certificate (photos are not accepted) and valid ID, pass a 10-question local food safety test with 70% or higher, and pay the card fee.
How much does the SNHD manager card cost?
As of January 1, 2026, a first-time SNHD Certified Food Safety Manager Card is $25. That fee is paid to SNHD and is separate from the $179.95 course and exam package.
How long is the SNHD manager card valid?
Up to five years. The card’s expiration date matches the expiration date on your ANSI-accredited food protection manager certificate.
What does Washoe County require?
Northern Nevada Public Health requires at least one CFPM at all food establishments except Risk Level 1 and temporary establishments. New Risk Level 2 and 3 establishments must meet the requirement within 60 days of permit issuance, and the certificate must be posted next to the permit to operate.
Who is exempt in Nevada?
Exemptions vary by jurisdiction. SNHD excludes low-risk, temporary and other minimal-risk establishments. Washoe County exempts Risk Level 1 and temporary establishments. Under NAC 446.052, low-risk establishments, such as most convenience stores and places selling only prepackaged non-TCS foods, may answer the inspector’s questions instead.
Can I take the Nevada food manager exam online?
Yes. The exam is taken online with a remote proctor from your home or office. No scheduling is required. You need a laptop, desktop or Chromebook with a webcam and microphone, a government-issued photo ID and a private room.
What does the $179.95 package include?
The package includes the self-paced online video course, chapter quizzes and practice exam, the ANAB-accredited Food Protection Manager exam, the remote proctor fee, a second exam attempt if needed, and the 5-year certificate.
What happens if I fail the exam?
Your package includes two exam attempts. If you do not pass the first attempt, you can take the exam a second time at no additional cost.
Can I use my phone or tablet for the exam?
No. Mobile phones, iPads and tablets are not supported for the proctored exam. You can study the course on any device, but the exam requires a laptop, desktop or Chromebook with a webcam and microphone.
Is this certification equivalent to ServSafe?
Yes. Both Always Food Safe and ServSafe appear on SNHD’s list of accepted ANSI-accredited food protection manager programs, and both are accredited under Conference for Food Protection standards.
