Who Needs Food Manager Certification in Michigan?
The Michigan Food Law requires most food establishments to employ at least one certified food safety manager. Certification comes from passing an ANSI-accredited exam such as Always Food Safe’s.

Certified Food Safety Manager
- These establishments must employ at least one managerial employee certified under an ANSI-accredited program: food service establishments (except licensed temporary ones), extended retail food establishments, and food service operated within a retail grocery.
- A certified manager is recognized with full faith and credit by the state and all local units of government in Michigan.
- To stay certified, you must pass an ANSI/CFP accredited exam once every 5 years.

Keep a Certified Manager on Staff
- Establishments required to have a certified manager must continually employ at least one.
- After losing a certified manager or a change of ownership, a new certified manager must be employed within 90 days.
- Covered operations include restaurants, bars, schools, hospitals, mobile food establishments and special transitory food units.
- A person in charge must be present during all hours of operation.

Is food manager certification required in Michigan?
Yes. Under MCL 289.2129, food service establishments (except licensed temporary ones), extended retail food establishments, and food service operations within retail groceries must employ at least one certified food safety manager.
Is the Always Food Safe certification accepted in Michigan?
Yes. Michigan requires certification under a program accredited by the American National Standards Institute using Conference for Food Protection standards. The Always Food Safe Food Protection Manager exam is accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB).
Is my certificate accepted by every Michigan county and city?
Yes. Michigan law says an individual certified under an ANSI-accredited program is recognized with full faith and credit by the state and all local units of government throughout Michigan.
How long do I have to replace a certified manager?
After the loss of a certified manager or a change of ownership, a new certified manager must be employed within 90 days.
Does the certified manager have to be on site at all times?
No. Michigan requires establishments to continually employ a certified manager and to have a person in charge present during all hours of operation, but the certified manager does not have to be the person in charge on every shift.
Can I take the Michigan food manager exam online?
Yes. The exam is taken online with a remote proctor from your home or office. No scheduling is required. You need a laptop, desktop or Chromebook with a webcam and microphone, a government-issued photo ID and a private room.
How long is the certificate valid?
The Always Food Safe Food Protection Manager certificate is valid for five years. Michigan requires certified managers to pass an accredited exam once every 5 years.

What happens if I fail the exam?

Can I use my phone or tablet for the exam?

Is this certification equivalent to ServSafe?
Both the Always Food Safe and ServSafe food manager exams are accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) under the Conference for Food Protection standards, and both meet the Michigan Food Law requirement.
