Who Needs Food Manager Certification in Indiana?

Indiana requires most food establishments to have at least one Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) responsible for all periods of operation. Older Indiana rules called this person a “certified food handler,” but it has always required the proctored manager exam.

IC 16-42-5.2 & 410 IAC 7-22 (as amended by HEA 1210)

Indiana CFPM Requirement

  • Each food establishment must have at least one CFPM responsible for all periods of operation. The CFPM does not have to be present during all hours.
  • New establishments and ownership changes have 6 months to comply. If your CFPM leaves, you have 3 months to replace them.
  • The certificate must come from an exam given by an accredited testing service recognized by the Conference for Food Protection, and must be renewed every 5 years.
  • Keep the CFPM’s name, certificate copy and photo ID at the establishment for inspectors.
  • Establishments under the same operator on the same or contiguous property can share a CFPM.

Exemptions

Who Does Not Need a CFPM

  • Establishments that do not cook raw food of animal origin, or only heat or serve precooked foods, serve a continental breakfast, beverages or ice, low-hazard foods such as baked goods and popcorn, or prepackaged food.
  • Licensed hospitals and health facilities, certain senior housing and continuing care communities, mental health centers, and qualifying nonprofit food pantries.
  • Certain tax-exempt nonprofit organizations, which may still choose to use a CFPM.

Indiana Food Manager Certification FAQs

Is food manager certification required in Indiana?

Yes, for most food establishments. Indiana law requires at least one certified food protection manager responsible for all periods of the establishment’s operation, unless an exemption applies.

Is an Indiana “certified food handler” the same as a food manager?

Yes. Indiana’s rule 410 IAC 7-22 originally used the term certified food handler, but it required passing a proctored food manager certification exam. After House Enrolled Act 1210 in 2020, the role is called a certified food protection manager. Basic food handler training does not meet this requirement.

Does the certified manager have to be on site at all times?

No. Indiana requires a CFPM responsible for all periods of operation, but the CFPM does not have to be present during all hours unless a variance requires it.

How long does a new establishment have to get certified?

A new food establishment, or one that changes ownership, has six months to comply. If your CFPM leaves and you no longer have one, you have three months to comply.

Which Indiana establishments are exempt?

Establishments that do not cook raw food of animal origin, or only heat or serve precooked foods, continental breakfasts, beverages, ice, low-hazard foods or prepackaged food, are exempt. Hospitals, licensed health facilities, certain senior living communities, mental health centers, qualifying nonprofit food pantries and certain tax-exempt organizations are also exempt.

What documents do I need to keep at the establishment?

The establishment must be able to give inspectors the CFPM’s name and copies of their certificate and photo identification card. Remove the certificate when the CFPM leaves.

Is the Always Food Safe certification accepted in Indiana?

Yes. Indiana accepts certificates from an exam given by an accredited testing service recognized by the Conference for Food Protection. The Always Food Safe Food Protection Manager exam is accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) under those standards.

Can I take the Indiana food manager exam online?

Yes. The exam is taken online with a remote proctor from your home or office. No scheduling is required. You need a laptop, desktop or Chromebook with a webcam and microphone, a government-issued photo ID and a private room.

How long is the certificate valid?

The certificate is valid for five years. Indiana requires a CFPM to obtain a valid certificate every five years.

What does the $179.95 package include?

The package includes the self-paced online video course, chapter quizzes and practice exam, the ANAB-accredited Food Protection Manager exam, the remote proctor fee, a second exam attempt if needed, and the 5-year certificate.

Can I use my phone or tablet for the exam?

No. Mobile phones, iPads and tablets are not supported for the proctored exam. You can study the course on any device, but the exam requires a laptop, desktop or Chromebook with a webcam and microphone.

Is this certification equivalent to ServSafe?

Yes. Both the Always Food Safe and ServSafe food manager exams are accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) under Conference for Food Protection standards, which is what Indiana requires.
