Do You Need Food Manager Certification in Vermont?

Vermont’s Health Regulations for Food Service Establishments do not require a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM), but they recognize CFPM status as one way for the person in charge to show required food safety knowledge. The Vermont Department of Health Food & Lodging Program licenses and inspects establishments.

Vermont Food Service Regulations §5-222

The Person-in-Charge Rule

  • A person in charge must be present during all hours of operation.
  • During inspections and on request, the person in charge must demonstrate knowledge of foodborne disease prevention, HACCP principles and the regulations.
  • Being a CFPM who passed a test that is part of an accredited program is one of three ways to show it. The others are compliance with the regulations and answering the inspector’s questions correctly.

Vermont Department of Health

Recommended Training

  • The Department recommends that the person in charge receive food safety training to train employees and demonstrate knowledge.
  • It points operators to ANAB-accredited CFPM programs.
  • The retail food license application asks for your Certified Food Safety Manager’s name, accredited program and expiration date, with an option to check if you have none.

Why certify? A CFPM gives your person in charge documented proof of food safety knowledge at every inspection, and the credential is recognized in states that require it. Looking for food handler training?
