Who Needs Food Manager Certification in Utah?
Utah’s Food Safety Manager Certification Act requires every food service establishment to be managed by at least one full-time certified food safety manager. As of May 6, 2026, Utah recertification is every five years.

The Requirement
- Each food service establishment must be managed by at least one full-time certified food safety manager at each site. The manager does not need to be present during all hours of operation.
- If your certified manager leaves, you have 60 days to hire a new one or have another employee start an approved course.
- Utah’s Department of Health and Human Services lists The Always Food Safe Company, LLC among approved food safety manager exams.
- Certified food safety managers are exempt from Utah’s food handler permit requirement.

Submit to Your Local Health Department
- Before managing an establishment, submit proof of your passing score to the local health department where it is located.
- Local health departments may not charge a fee to process it and must accept copies by mail, email or in person.
- Renew every five years (previously three) and submit renewal proof within 30 days.
- Example: Salt Lake County accepts the registration form and certificate copy at HealthFood@slco.org.

Utah Food Manager Certification FAQs
Is food manager certification required in Utah?
Yes. Under Utah Code 26B-7-412, each food service establishment must be managed by at least one full-time certified food safety manager at each establishment site. Some operations, such as certain special events, are exempt.
Does the certified manager need to be there during all hours?
No. Utah law says the full-time certified food safety manager does not need to be present at the establishment during all hours of operation.
What do I do after passing the exam?
Submit documentation of your passing score to the local health department where your establishment is located before you manage the establishment. Under H.B. 172, local health departments cannot charge a fee and must accept copies by mail, email or in person.
How often do Utah food safety managers recertify?
Every five years. H.B. 172, effective May 6, 2026, changed the renewal period from three years to five years. Submit renewal documentation to your local health department within 30 days of completing it.
Is the Always Food Safe exam approved in Utah?
Yes. The Utah Department of Health and Human Services lists The Always Food Safe Company, LLC among approved food safety manager examinations.
What if our certified manager leaves?
You have 60 days from the end of their employment to hire a new certified food safety manager or designate an employee who begins an approved food safety manager course. The local health department may extend this for reasonable cause.
Do certified managers need a Utah food handler permit?
No. A person who meets Utah’s food safety manager certification requirements is exempt from the food handler permit requirement.
Can I take the Utah food manager exam online?
Yes. The exam is taken online with a remote proctor from your home or office. No scheduling is required. You need a laptop, desktop or Chromebook with a webcam and microphone, a government-issued photo ID and a private room.
What does the $179.95 package include?
The package includes the self-paced online video course, chapter quizzes and practice exam, the ANAB-accredited Food Protection Manager exam, the remote proctor fee, a second exam attempt if needed, and the 5-year certificate.
What happens if I fail the exam?
Your package includes two exam attempts. If you do not pass the first attempt, you can take the exam a second time at no additional cost.
Can I use my phone or tablet for the exam?
No. Mobile phones, iPads and tablets are not supported for the proctored exam. You can study the course on any device, but the exam requires a laptop, desktop or Chromebook with a webcam and microphone.
Is this certification equivalent to ServSafe?
Yes. Both Always Food Safe and ServSafe appear on Utah’s list of approved food safety manager exams, and both are ANAB accredited under Conference for Food Protection standards.
