Who Needs Food Manager Certification in Rhode Island?
Rhode Island’s Certification of Managers in Food Safety rule (216-RICR-50-10-2) requires certified food safety managers at food establishments that prepare time/temperature control for safety (TCS) food. The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) Center for Food Protection issues the state certification.

How Many Certified Managers You Need
- At least one full-time, on-site certified food safety manager, age 18 or older, where TCS food is prepared.
- Two full-time, on-site certified managers if you employ 10 or more full-time equivalent food-preparation employees.
- Establishments primarily serving the elderly or people with weakened immune systems need a certified manager present whenever hot food is prepared.
- If a certified manager leaves, you have 60 days to replace them or enroll someone in an approved course.

Getting Your Rhode Island Certification

Is food manager certification required in Rhode Island?
Yes. Under 216-RICR-50-10-2, every food establishment where time/temperature control for safety (TCS) food is prepared must employ at least one full-time, on-site manager certified in food safety who is at least 18 years old.
When do I need two certified managers?
Establishments employing 10 or more full-time equivalent employees directly involved in food preparation must employ at least two full-time, on-site certified food safety managers.
Is Always Food Safe approved in Rhode Island?
Yes. The Always Food Safe Company is on RIDOH’s list of approved Food Safety Manager Training Programs offered online. Online programs require an approved proctored exam after the course, which this package includes.
Do I have to apply to RIDOH after passing the exam?
Yes. Rhode Island issues its own Food Safety Manager certification. Submit the RIDOH application with a copy of your food safety certificate, hours of training, identification and the $50 non-refundable fee to the RIDOH Center for Food Protection.
Is the $50 RIDOH fee included in the package?
No. The $179.95 package covers the course, exam, remote proctor, second attempt and the Always Food Safe certificate. The $50 state application fee is paid directly to the State of Rhode Island.
How long is Rhode Island certification valid?
RIDOH state certification must be renewed every five years. If it has been expired for more than six months, you must retake an approved 8-hour course and pass the exam. The Always Food Safe certificate is also valid for five years.
What if my certified manager leaves?
You have 60 days to employ a new certified manager or have someone enrolled in an approved food safety course. RIDOH may extend that period.
Where do I post my certificate?
RIDOH requires food safety manager certificates to be prominently posted next to the license to operate, and removed if the person no longer works at the establishment.
Can I take the Rhode Island food manager exam online?
Yes. The exam is taken online with a remote proctor from your home or office. No scheduling is required. You need a laptop, desktop or Chromebook with a webcam and microphone, a government-issued photo ID and a private room.
