Do You Need Food Manager Certification in Kansas?

Kansas does not have a statewide requirement to employ a certified food manager. But the Kansas Food Code requires the person in charge to demonstrate food safety knowledge, and certification is the most reliable way to do it.

Kansas Food Code — K.A.R. 4-28-8

What Kansas Requires

  • Kansas adopts the Kansas Food Code dated October 20, 2022, enforced by the Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA).
  • During inspections and upon request, the person in charge must demonstrate knowledge of foodborne illness prevention, HACCP principles and Code requirements.
  • Being a certified food protection manager from an accredited program is one way to demonstrate that knowledge. The others are having no priority violations during the inspection or correctly answering the inspector’s questions.

Why Kansas Operators Certify

  • KDA says food establishments may find employing a certified manager helps improve compliance with food safety requirements.
  • KDA points operators to CFP-accredited programs listed by ANSI. The Always Food Safe exam is ANAB accredited to that standard.
  • Employers, franchisors and some local permits may require certification, and it carries to states that require it.
