Who Needs Food Manager Certification in Georgia?

Georgia requires a Certified Food Safety Manager (CFSM) at most food service establishments and a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) at most retail food facilities. Both are met by passing an ANSI-accredited exam such as Always Food Safe’s.

Certified Food Safety Manager (CFSM)

  • At least one employee with supervisory and management responsibility must be a CFSM who passed an accredited exam.
  • Georgia only accepts exams accredited through ANSI as meeting Conference for Food Protection criteria.
  • New permits, ownership changes and CFSM departures have 60 days to employ a CFSM.
  • The original certificate must be posted in public view, with a copy kept on file.
  • Each CFSM is designated to one establishment only.

Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM)

  • Retail food facilities need at least one supervisory employee who is a CFPM.
  • To qualify, the employee must pass a test accredited by ANSI.
  • The CFPM does not need to be present at all times, but a Person in Charge must be present during all hours of operation.
  • Minimal-risk firms are not required to have a CFPM.

Is food manager certification required in Georgia?

Yes. Under Georgia rule 511-6-1-.03, most food service establishments must have at least one employee with supervisory and management responsibility who is a Certified Food Safety Manager (CFSM). Retail food facilities regulated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture need a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM).

Is the Always Food Safe certification accepted in Georgia?

Yes. Georgia accepts food safety manager exams accredited through ANSI as meeting Conference for Food Protection criteria. The Always Food Safe Food Protection Manager exam is accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB).

What is the difference between a CFSM and a CFPM in Georgia?

CFSM is the term used in the Georgia Department of Public Health food service rules for restaurants. CFPM is the term used by the Georgia Department of Agriculture for retail food facilities. Both require passing an ANSI-accredited food manager exam.

How long do I have to get a certified food safety manager?

A Georgia food service establishment has 60 days from initial permit issuance, a change of ownership, or the departure of its CFSM to employ a new CFSM.

Does the certified manager have to be on site at all times?

No. Georgia does not require the CFSM to be in the establishment during all hours of operation, but a person in charge must be present at all times. When the CFSM is on the premises, he or she is the person in charge.

Do I have to post my certificate?

Yes. The original CFSM certificate must be posted in public view in the food service establishment, and a copy must be kept on file for the health inspector.

Can I take the Georgia food manager exam online?

Yes. The exam is taken online with a remote proctor from your home or office. No scheduling is required. You need a laptop, desktop or Chromebook with a webcam and microphone, a government-issued photo ID and a private room.

How long is the certificate valid?

The Always Food Safe Food Protection Manager certificate is valid for five years. Georgia requires a new certificate within 90 days of expiration.
